VMI Sports Medicine
The VMI Sports Medicine program focuses its attention on the physical well-being of the Institute’s cadet-athletes. The department is led by Director of Sports Medicine Lance Fujiwara, who is in his 27th year in Lexington. Fujiwara and his staff service the medical needs of VMI’s 18 Intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as the treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for the entire Corps of Cadets.
The Sports Medicine Staff consists of four full-time employees and a cast of seasonal athletic interns. Marco Giuliani serves as as Assistant Athletic Trainer and is the head trainer for football, while Kelsey Croak rejoined VMI in the summer of 2014 as a full-time Assistant Athletic Trainer after completing her Graduate Assistantship at the Institute during the prior spring. Meghan Melinchak, another assistant trainer, also rejoins the Keydets after having spent the 2011-12 season as a graduate assistant in Lexington.
In addition, Christopher Morash and Jessica Siler are seasonal athletic training interns who will work with various programs during this academic year.
In addition to a top-notch staff, the department also boasts first-rate facilities throughout Post. The most recent addition was a greatly expanded area in Clarkson-McKenna Hall, the home of VMI Football, that includes several state-of-the-art amenities, including a separate doctor’s examination room, a cold plunge pool, enhanced rehabilitation equipment, as well as enlarged treatment and taping areas.
