VMI Athletic Training:
The VMI Sports Medicine program focuses its attention on the physical well-being of the Institute’s cadet-athletes. The department is led by Director of Sports Medicine Lance Fujiwara, who is in his 22nd year in Lexington. Fujiwara and his staff service the medical needs of VMI’s 17 Intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as the treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for the entire Corps of Cadets.
With expanded responsibilities and increased workload, the sports medicine staff now consists of three full-time employees, three graduate assistants and several cadet assistants. Associate Head Athletic Trainer John Hoffman is in his seventh year back with the Institute, while Assistant Athletic Trainer Andrew Spadafora returned to VMI in the summer of 2007 after a one-year stint back at his alma mater, BYU. Serving as graduate assistants in the program this year are Becky Bedard, Nicole Rendos and Leah Sisson, each of whom are working toward a Masters degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia.
In addition to a top-notch staff, the department also boasts first-rate facilities throughout Post. The most recent addition was a greatly expanded area in Clarkson-McKenna Hall, the home of VMI Football, that includes several state-of-the-art amenities, including a separate doctor’s examination room, a cold plunge pool, enhanced rehabilitation equipment, as well as enlarged treatment and taping areas. The program also houses separate facilities at Cameron Hall and Patchin Field, combining to service each of the school’s 17 athletic programs near their home turf.
