VMI Track & Field/XC Facilities:

The Keydets utilize three facilities for the team’s needs: Cormack Field House (AKA “The Pit”) is the team’s indoor facility, the H.M. “Son” Read Mem. Track houses VMI’s outdoor meets, while VMI’s cross country meets take place at the Virginia Horse Center.

The Cormack Field House continues to provide an outstanding training and meet site for the winter track season. Nicknamed "The Pit" when it was home to VMI basketball, the buiding was renamed in 1986 after Walt B. Cormack, the legendary VMI track coach who guided the Keydets for 25 years and started the Winter Relays, a renowned meet which attracts up to 30 schools a year.

The H.M. "Son" Read '16 Memorial Track is VMI's Track and Field's outdoor facility. In 1986, the outdoor track was converted to from six to eight lanes, and from 440 yards to 400 meters. Completion of the project along with renovations and subsequent resurfacings, including the 2007 resurfacing, gave VMI one of the best ovals in the Southeast and 10,000 seat outdoor facility for prime venue hosting. VMI played host to the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1991, 1994, 1997 and 2001, before hosting its first Big South Championship in 2005.

The Virginia Horse Center is the home of VMI Cross Country. Pictured above, the course provides a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains throughout each athlete's run. Events at the Virginia Horse Center have hosted such runners as 2007 NCAA Cross Country Champion Josh McDougal of Liberty, 2009 Track and Field All-American Donnie Cowart of VMI and 2009 Women's Cross Country Southeast Regional winner Catherine White from the University of Virginia.
